Ch.11 Case Study Report

I. Statement of the Problem
Jack Donohue is from Denver and he is a first year student at Colorado state college. He is one of the fraternity members. The name is Gamma Delta Chi and this fraternity is famous for good parties. After rush season, Gamma Delta Chi members had a party. Jack is not good at drinking so he does not want to drink but Ron Reilly who is a pledge master and other members want Jack to drink. Jack does not any choices so he drinks lots of strong alcohol and finally he slumped on the floor. After he wakes up, he felt lots of pain and he thought himself that how does he have to do.

II. Suggestion of Possible Solution
A. Jack has to get out of the fraternity.
B. Jack can just stay in the fraternity.
C. Jack can stay in the fraternity, and does not drink.

III. Evaluation of Possible Solution
A. Jack has to get out of the fraternity.
-Advantage: If he gets out of the fraternity, he does not have to worry about strong drinking. Also he can get a comfortable mind.
-Disadvantage: If he gets out of the fraternity, maybe he can not enjoy many interesting parties and he lost his dream to be a famous fraternity member.
B. Jack can just stay in the fraternity and enjoy the fraternity’s life.
-Advantage: If he stays in the fraternity, he can enjoy lots of parties and gets pride that he is one of the famous and popular fraternity members.
C. Jack can stay in the fraternity, and does not drink.
-Advantage: If he stays and does not drink, he does not have to worry about heavy drinking anymore and he can keep his interesting life in his fraternity.
-Disadvantage: If he does that, maybe he will be comfortable because he does not care about drinking. However, other fraternity members will be upset and they do not want to hang out with him because the fraternity always enjoys drinking. So Jack will be outsider in his fraternity.

IV. Selection of a Solution
A. Jack has to get out of the fraternity.
I think this solution is the best way. If he gets out of the fraternity, he can avoid drinking and he will not stressful because of the heavy drinking anymore. Even though he lose his chance that one of the best fraternities member, his mind will be very comfortable.

Type of film: Drama

Summary and Analysis.
Episode 3.
One day, Dawson got copy of the PSAT so he showed it to his friends and they discussed about that. However, because of fire alarm, they went outside and that time,Andie stole it. Missing of PSAT,Dawson suspected his friends.

Episode 15.
Joey was one of the painter for school. She painted the wall but Matt destroyed the wall that Joey painted. Because of it,principal Green expelled him.On the other hand,Andie was nervous because she stole PSAT.Finally, she told her secret to principal Green but Green forgave her.

Relation to case study.
Andie in the drame character and Igore in chapter 9 had a plagiarism. It is one of the most important rules in school but they broke it. However, the different thing between Andie and Igore is Andie told her plagialism to principal but Igore did not tell it. I think Andie was more honest.

Reaction to Film.
This drama was very interesting to me.It was the only drama that i watched in America culture class. The overall story was about students' various school life so i could sympathized very well. Also i knew plagiarizing in School is very serious problem while i was watching that drama.

Activity 4 ,page 147.

If words are unique or writer's special words, it can be the property of the writer but words are very normal and usual things, it does not consider the property.
When writer wants to explain about strange and unfamiliar words, footnotes are required. Sometimes source that writer found information is used. Using quotation marks is as same as America. If writer brought some sentence from other's speaking or famous sites, writer uses quotation marks.
Writer uses bibliography when writer finishes his/her writing or something. Bibliography is located in the end of the writing or book.
I think these all ways are not different with America. The way that each country's rule is the same.

Type of film: Drama,Romance.

Summary and Analysis.
Samuel is Amish boy.He treveled with his mother Rachel. They went to the train station to go to Philadelphia. While they were waiting for train,Samuel went to restroom and he watched murder scene,so he was the only witness.John is a very honest police officer. He wanted to try to protect them from McFee parties.John and McFee got gun battle and because of that,John got wounded. He brouht Rachel and Samuel to Amish town and he got treatmented from Amish man.He stayed and adjusted to new and unfamiliar life in Amish town helping Amishes. While he is staying there,McFee party found out where he was. They droped in Amish town and they tried to kill John. However, their plan was failed and 2 people died. Finally, police officeres came to Amish town and John leaved that.

Relation to case study.
I think John is a person who adjusted to new life and culture very easily. He followed the Amish's rule well and he tried to be with Amish people working and helping with them. However,Dita could not like John. She did not try to accept new culture. She just tried to avoid her hard time in America.I think both of them got a similar situation but their attitide which accepted a new culture was different.

Reaction to Film.
I think this movie was the first movie that i watched very interesting in America culture class. It was easy to understand about culture shock so i could know it very easily.John and Rachel's love story was also very interesting thing. They had different culture but they fell in love each other.I have seen some Amish people in my dorm so it was very famililar and amazing while i was watching this movie. I was able to know about Amish watching this movie. After i wathced this movie,i came across Amish students. At that time, i recalled 'Witness'. Anyway, this movie was very fantastic and interesting to me.I expect to watch like this movie the next time.

Reaction Paragrarh.

Tae seon and ziyao got a discussion with classmates. They prepared some discussion questions that was related with movie.(Witness)That activity was such as Amish culture.I think they prepared enough questions. They made different aspects questions.Even though Tae seon's hand writing was a little bit confused,we got a good job i think. In my opinion, if we get a discussion presentation, we need more informations or specific questions.

Reaction Paragrarh.

We got a role play dividing two groups. Our team members were Lee,Se yong,Tae seon and Zyhao. Our team's situation was 'Act out a scene in the future in which Dita meets with her adviser and receives some moral support and practice advice.'Lee acted as an Indinesian advisor and Tae seon acted Dita.Se yong acted Dita's roommate and i and Zhyao acted roommate's boyfriends.I think our role play was the better and it was a little bit weird and shocking.Vacabulary presentation which did tina and Quin was good. They prepared game but our team did not win that game so we did not get delicious chocolates and jelly.I liked this all activities.

Comparing Dita and Masika

Both of this case has similarities and differences. I will write similarities firstly.
Dita and Masika are not Americans. Both of them are alien. Dita is from Indonesia and Masika is from Congo in Africa. In addition, both of them went to America to study. They were America college students. They felt culture shock while they were living America. They felt loneliness and isolation from their classmates because they did not get along with America friends. Especially, Dita felt that America food is not fit to her so she did not like America foods. America foods are too bland to her. Also both of them cried because of their hard time.
Secondly, I will write differences. Dita was just a student but Masika was married and she has a lively daughter. In addition, even though she did not get along with her classmates, Masika loved her class. However, Dita did not like her class. Besides, Dita hated American foods but it was not difficult to Masika. Dita got a problem with her roommate about sex and she regretted to come to America but Masika did not do that. Masika thought and asked some questions by herself. Such as ‘What was causing these feelings of isolation and confusion?, ‘Would I eve fit into this culture?’ Like this, Masika thought herself about different lies between America and her country. Moreover, Masika thought cultural adjustment is a process, that is not finished and she said it is a life-time adventure. She realized more cultural things when she was living in America. In addition, at the end of their story, Masika accepted her life in America but Dita still had a hard time to stay in America. I think Masika is more generous than Dita.

Smoke signals - Film Analysis Report.

Title of Film: Smoke signals.
Date: 1998
Director of film:Chris Eyre.
Actor:Adam Beach(Victor Joseph),Evan Adams(Thomas),Gary Farmer(Arnold Joseph)
Type of film: Comedy,Drama.

Summary and Analysis.
There were two Indian boys.Their names were Victor and Thomas. When they were baby,Thomas's parents died because of fire.Victor's father(Arnold) was a heavy drinker and he got a trouble with his wife. So he left somewhere.
One day,Victor and his mom heard some news about Arnold's residence. Victor wanted to find his father and he went on a journey with Thomas. Finally they found Arnold's residence but he already died. While he made a travel,he decided to forgive his father.

Relation to case study.
We can see some unfair discrimination in this movie and chapter 10.
In this movie,Victor and Thomas took the bus. There were lots of Americans in there and they gazed at their face strangely.Their attitude was similar with the people who were in Chapter 10.

Reaction to Film.

Actually, While i was watching this movie,i was not impressed.I was a little bit angry.I could't understand Arnold's irresponsibility. But after the movie finished, i could understand his conduct. One thing that i liked in this movie was Thomas. When he called victor with very funny intonation, i laughed a lot. Even though His appearance was a little ridiculous, i liked his funny intonation and action.
